It is today the symbol of our city. It was ordered to be built in 1876 by the Commander of the Plaza and Governor of the Province, the Heredian military man Fadrique Gutiérrez (1844-1897). He made the design of the work himself, since he was a skilled draftsman and sculptor. By decree of November 2, 1974, the fort was declared a National Monument.
